TRAVEL
Steal my Itinerary: Where do you want to go?
Taking that into consideration, l’ve carefully crafted this guide for you so that it matches a wide range of all your appropriate travel styles.
Travel Resources:
My wife and I came to Germany back in 2014 for one primary objective… travel!
At the time I hadn’t been to Europe, didn’t know the best way to get around, and wasn’t sure where to start. We came here employed by the US government on a 2 year contract, so like many of the military families in our community, our time was short and needed to be purposeful!
We wandered our way through Europe by car, bus, train, cheap plane tickets, and even cruises.
Needless to say, our 2 year contract turned into an indefinite contract and we learned a lot about how to travel.
Below you will find travel resources and tips we used (and still use) to take advantage of affordable travel within Europe and beyond!
Pro Tips:
My #1 recommendation for you to achieve maximum travel success is to SET TRAVEL GOALS with your “travel team.” You can do this before or right after moving overseas, but take the time to sit with your travel team and make a list of where you want to go and what you want to do.  Out of sight, out of mind, so write it down, pin it to a wall, and make sure it’s located in a place that can be SEEN EVERYDAY to remind you!
- Travel by Train
The train system in Europe is incredible. If you live, or plan on traveling through Europe, you have to take advantage of this super convenient resource. Â
- Germany’s most popular travel and mobility train app is DB Navigator (Deutsche Bahn). Although tailored for Germany travel, this app is useful in all European countries.
- Bavarian (Bayern) Ticket: This low cost ticket will give you unlimited travel for the entire day anywhere in the state of Bavaria. This includes any underground subway, above ground trams in the city, and buses. Anytime we’re traveling within Bavaria we use this ticket.
- 49 Euro Ticket: Unlimited travel for only 49 euros per month. Valid throughout Germany for ALL means of public transport.
- One of the most intimidating aspects of train travel is understanding the schedule and timetables, so I broke it down for you in this video
- For SUPER affordable train rides (but limited routes), check out FlixTrain!
- Travel by Bus:
- EuroTrip Adventures: This company has been our #1 budget travel agency (by bus), but there’s also “Fly-In & Meet Us There Tours.".
- They conveniently pick you up right outside the gate of most bases in Germany. With vacation packages as low as €49, they offer overnight bus rides or multi-night stays in some of Europe’s most popular destinations.
- For one of the most affordable buses in Europe, with a wide range of destinations, you have to try a ride on the Flixbus.
- Travel by Plane
- US Flights24: Based in Grafenwoehr Germany, US Flights24 is tailored to the military community (although anyone can use their services) for budget flights, rental cars, vacation packages, and travel insurance. Learn more here.
- Get $30 OFF on ANY flight, or 3% cash back on ANY vacation package when you type (or mention) "DTV" in an email info@usflights24.com or Whatsapp/Text to +1 904-299-5799.
RyanAir
- When it comes to airfare in Europe, you won’t find anything cheaper. But... you get what you pay for.
- I think we all have a love/hate relationship with Ryanair, the “Southwest” of Europe.
- You can literally find flights for less than €10!
- Yes, you read that right.
- This discount airline is one of my favorites to use, but you need to BE AWARE of their hidden fees.
- Airfare through Ryanair can NOT be beaten, but you’ll want to travel light and efficient. Ryanair makes their money on overpriced luggage fees, simple amendments to your booking like name change fees, and seat upgrades.
- Although the app is convenient to book flights, you can find the best deals by searching on your computer desktop!
- Boat: Cruises

LOCAL TRAVEL
POPULAR ATTRACTIONS
Local Resources: Germany
When we move from one place to another, we need new local resources. Health care, auto mechanics, rental cars, restaurants, pet groomers and so on.
This can be overwhelming when moving to a foreign country where you don’t speak the language and you don’t know who to trust. So, in order to help you with a smooth transition overseas, we’ve put together a list of industry specific resources at each base in Germany.
